A haven for birders, Lake Naivasha lies at the highest point of the Great Rift Valley and has been known to shrink considerably in times of extreme drought. A flourishing horticulture industry in the area is also impacting water levels and quality. One of the best ways to view the wildlife is by boat. More than 400 species of birds have been spotted here, including African fish eagles. Hippos slosh in the water, and giraffes, zebra, buffalo, and eland graze around the edges of the lake. Keep a lookout for colobus monkeys in the canopies, too.
Near Lake Naivasha, the Crater Lake Game Sanctuary features a wildlife-rich nature trail. Just south of Lake Naivasha, the relatively affordable Hell’s Gate National Park protects a wide variety of wildlife and offers excellent climbing opportunities with two extinct volcanoes and the red cliffs of Hell’s Gate Gorge. On the southern shore of Lake Naivasha, you can pop in for a cup of tea at the Elsamere Conservation Centre, the former home of the late Joy Adamson, author of Born Free and her husband George.
Many of the places we feature across Kenya already include a wide range of activities, but in some cases there are highly recommended extra activities that are not automatically included as part of your stay.
These day-trips and excursions often add a special dimension to your itinerary, elevating it from a memorable holiday to the trip of a lifetime. They are often very popular, so they are best booked in advance with Bushgetaways Tours & Travels before you depart on your trip.

A family Holiday safari is a big family holiday unlike any other. A chance to see animals of all kinds in beautiful natural environments. To experience African cultures and share real adventures together. And maybe finish with a few days by the Indian Ocean. When we design a family safari holiday we take you into the heart of real Africa nothing like what you find in package holiday brochures. You’ll fly by small plane into remote places, stay in small luxury camps and lodges surrounded by beauty and wildlife. Have fun with expert guides who’ll take you on adventures you’ll remember for ever. One minute you’ll enjoy a family of baboons playing, chasing each other through the trees, then watch spellbound as twenty elephant drink and hose themselves at the river’s edge. Mostly, you will experience this with just you, your guide and no-one else.
